Learning Numbers

Overview

Age Range: 9 – 13 years old

Begin with the basics and learn numbers in languages such as French and Spanish. In this activity students will use the micro:bit to aid in their learning of numbers in multiple languages. 

There are 2 different activity options that can be chosen for each language. 

  • Learn numbers 1 – 10.
  • Learn numbers 10 – 100 in multiples of 10.

Aims

  • See how digital technology can be used to aid in the learning of subjects other than IT and computing. 
  • Learn numbers from 1 – 100 in languages such as French and Spanish.

Mini Innovation Board

OLED Display

  • Micro USB Cable
  • Battery Pack
  • 1 x Connector Cable
  • 2 x AAA Batteries

Preparation

  1. Connect the micro:bit to the Mini Innovation board via the edge connector.
  2. Use the connector cable to connect the OLED display to the I2C connector on the Mini Innovation board.
  3. Connect the micro:bit to a computer via the microUSB cable.
  4. Download the code for the lesson activity you wish to use and upload it onto the micro:bit. Go to the top of this page for more details. Once the code is downloaded, unplug the micro:bit from the computer and connect the external battery pack.

Activity

Learn Numbers 1 - 10

  1. When the micro:bit is first turned on/powered the LED matrix will flash 5 times. After this has happened a number 1 will appear on the OLED display with the French or Spanish word for the number underneath.
  2. This number can be changed using the buttons on the micro:bit. Button A will increase the number by 1 and button B will decrease the number by 1. The maximum number available is 10 and the minimum is 1.
  3. The number will always appear above the French or Spanish word.
  4. The steps above can now be repeated as many times as you wish.

Activity

Learn Multiples of 10
